Chapter 11

The command area had transformed since Haden's last visit to Vex'thul's tent. Where before there'd been simple canvas structures and functional spacing, now a massive edifice dominated the space between all four legion encampments—a circular arena constructed from what looked like solidified shadow and bone, rising thirty feet into the evening air.

Thorwick waited at the perimeter.

The nine-foot demon stood with arms crossed, his blood-red scales catching the dying light. Those cat-like eyes tracked Haden's approach with clinical precision, assessing and cataloging without any particular emotion.

"You're punctual," Thorwick said. Not praise, just observation. "Follow."

They walked toward the arena through a corridor of lesser demons—D-ranks and C-ranks from various legions, all maintaining careful distance from each other. The spiritual pressure was suffocating. Haden felt it pressing against his skin like physical weight, dozens of powerful entities gathered in close proximity.

"Listen carefully," Thorwick said without looking back. "You will demonstrate your abilities for the captains tonight. You will comport yourself with utmost respect. You will follow orders from any captain as if they came from Vex'thul himself."

Haden nodded, throat tight.

"Of course, you should have been doing that anyway." Thorwick's scaled lips curved into something resembling a smirk. "But I know how unruly people get during these events. The captains enjoy testing merchandise beyond simple combat demonstrations. Refuse an order, show disrespect, fail to perform adequately..." He trailed off, shrugging. "Well. You understand consequences."

They passed another group of D-ranks. Haden recognized two from Vex'thul's entourage—the ones who'd accompanied the captain during executions and announcements. But a third demon walked with them, someone new.

This one carried a ring on one clawed finger, and attached to that ring by invisible spiritual tethers were two of the largest mindless demons Haden had ever seen.

Each creature stood twelve feet tall, built like the unholy offspring of bear and lizard. Massive shoulders supported arms thick as tree trunks, while their lower bodies moved on four powerful legs that ended in talons capable of rending stone. Their scales gleamed with a rosy pink sheen, and they wore light armor across their vital areas—chest plates and shoulder guards that looked almost decorative compared to their natural bulk.

Both were D-rank. Haden could feel it radiating from them, that density of power that marked the threshold between enhanced human and genuinely superhuman.

"Impressive specimens," Thorwick said, following Haden's gaze. "Captain Vex'thul breeds them for strength and obedience. No sapience whatsoever—just raw power and perfect compliance. The Fourth Legion favors such creatures."

The D-rank controlling the ring noticed them watching and offered a nod to Thorwick. Professional acknowledgment between peers.

They continued walking, rounding the arena's curve toward a separate entrance. As they approached, Haden spotted movement ahead—another group of demons emerging from the Fourth Legion's section of camp.

And there, walking between two D-rank escorts, was a ten-foot demon woman that Haden recognized from his earlier glimpses of Vex'thul's forces.

Tyressa.

She moved with the careful dignity of someone trying to maintain composure despite circumstances. Her gorilla-like frame was powerful, corded with muscle that spoke of genuine combat capability.
